Astrology and Purpose

It’s been said that the journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step. Yes, it’s true every journey begins with an action. In our current times of chaos it’s often difficult to know where to begin. Changes continue without end and new challenges assault our senses every day.

Seeking answers has never been more critical to our survival. Becoming more conscious of our choices is the only option. The current divisiveness being experienced is rooted in lack. People lack a sense of self. They lack belonging and connection. So they are scrambling for answers and have decided that having dogmatic beliefs that are imposed on others is the way through their pain and suffering.

But the situation only becomes worse when divide and conquer is the coping mechanism. Astrology provides some direction and meaning to the chaos as our system of governing falls away in a crumbling foundation of values that are not valued. The future is not certain and it is up to each of us to create it every day. Learning more about your own multi-dimensional skills and challenges can help you to discern what is real and what is not.

Birth Chart Meaning

When I first discovered the birth or natal chart it looked like a blueprint. I wanted to learn how to read it to reveal the secrets of my soul. Becoming an experienced chart reader takes a lot of practice on real people. In the first 5 years of reading charts for family and friends, I had my first aha! moment.

Most people don’t know they have a purpose

Time and time again I heard about the sense of frustration and lack of direction. So many of you are living without a sense of your purpose in life. So many people either feel like they are not living up to other’s expectations or that they just haven’t found their niche. In the United States so much of the population focuses on celebrity as some type of standard. Role models for living your purpose aren’t in as much demand as the latest social media sensation or musical artist. Coupled with the focus on materialism, people are living in a fantasy world where wealth and fame are the goal.

Much like learning your personality type through Myers-Briggs or DISC systems, an astrology birth chart pinpoints your strengths, challenges, possibilities, and obstacles. The Rising Sign or Ascendant, which is the sign at the eastern horizon at the time of your birth, shows the Purpose or Life Path. Everything else fills in the details and it takes an integration approach to make sense of it all.

If you read horoscopes regularly, you should read both your Sun sign and your Rising sign. For example, I am an Aries Sun but a Virgo Rising. When I learned about this detail I realized why many horoscopes for Aries didn’t really speak to me. I’m living more of a Virgo path, which is an earth sign that is very organized and detailed. My Aries energy kicks in when I need to start something and I have the urge to start the fire going which energizes me and others.

You can find out your Rising Sign through inputting your birth data, including time and place of birth, in any one of many online free resources. I recommend either astro.com or astro-seek.com. Once you know your Rising Sign, here is an overview of the Life Path for each.

Rising Signs

  1. Aries: Expressing the self and being first.

  2. Taurus: Learning to manage the material world and possessions as a path to spiritual growth.

  3. Gemini: Experiencing the duality of the analytical and the cosmic mind; learning to communicate to others.

  4. Cancer: Creating family and home in your own unique way.

  5. Leo: Inspiring others through your self love and confidence.

  6. Virgo: Observing patterns, organizing and creating detail while communicating the vision to others.

  7. Libra: Experiencing life through one-to-one relationships and balancing the self vs. the other.

  8. Scorpio: Learning to feel your feelings; running the intense energy of life to heal the self and others.

  9. Sagittarius: Seeker of truth and philosophical values through a wide variety of experiences.

  10. Capricorn: Responsible action in caring for others; reaching a goal no matter the path to get there.

  11. Aquarius: Connecting the heart and mind to fulfill your humanitarian purpose.

  12. Pisces: Letting go of personal attachments for the greater good.

Along with the Rising Sign, your Sun and Moon comprise the Big Three. Knowing these and how they intertwine helps you to navigate the challenges of your Earth journey.

As a final note, here are my Big Three:

Virgo Rising

Aries Sun

Leo Moon

From the elemental level I have two fire signs and one earth sign. I’m a person with a lot of initiative and I enjoy starting anything. I’ve started several Marketing and Communications departments in my career and have reorganized offices in higher education as the needs of students and parents shift.

My Virgo energy gives me the ability to see what details need to happen, but I don’t necessarily want to do them! I work best in an environment with people who have both creative and analytical skills to achieve goals. I feel best when I can create a concept, make a plan, get the right people on board, and have the experience of working together. While I am goal oriented, the result isn’t as important to me as how we get there. The journey is more satisfying than the outcome.
